I have been a woodworking junkie for over fifty years and have tried a plethora of genres from straight up carpentry to intarsia, and cabinet and furniture making as you can see in the photo to the right. i have had success at some and lousy at others, but my love for all things wood has stayed strong all these years. Woodworking has however had to stay at the hobby level as work always got in the way. Over the last few years, I have become more interested in woodcarving, but found that between arthritis and insufficient skill I started looking at newer technology in my hobby work. I started looking into cnc routers as a way to achieve the types of projects I was interested making. I searched all kinds of available machines from inexpensive (junk) to over the top machines that belong in a huge woodworking shop. To achieve the size projects and wood art I wanted to make, I decided that most of the affordable devices were inadequate, and the larger units were unaffordable, so I did what I have always done and did it myself. I built a CNC Router large enough to do the carving work I wanted to do as well as sign work. The results are shown on the following pages of this site, with many more examples to come.
The process begins with finding the right artwork for the project, religious or patriotic or wildlife, then the best species of wood, then selecting the best size and amount of detail for the desired result. Sometimes it comes out the way I hoped and sometimes it is back to the drawing board.
Wood comes in so many colors and grain patterns with varying
hardness and cutting characteristics and as a result, no two pieces
are ever exactly the same. Wood also has a mind of its own, and based on temperature, humidity, and internal stresses, it can shrink, cup, bow or develop splits and checks all by itself. I work mainly with kiln dried furniture grade hardwoods in hopes of limiting those naturally occuring faults.
Standard items not currently in stock will ship in roughly 2 weeks
depending on lumber inventory and workload.
Special orders such as signs and engraved items that require artwork may take slightly longer due to typical trial and error issues.
Be patient, wood and machines don't always cooperate.
